Description

Silene latifolia

Less common than the Red Campion, White Campion grows on wasteland, cultivated land, roadsides and hedgerows. Luminous white flowers produce a clove-pink-like scent in the evenings and so attracts moths. Bees visit in the day, caterpillars eat the seeds and earwigs and ladybirds hibernate in the empty seed-cases. A brilliant wildflower for wildlife.

Sow in the autumn or early spring. To obtain better germination, pre-chill mixed with damp sand in the fridge for 4 to 6 weeks before sowing, either directly or into trays to plant out later.

Plant in any soil, not too rich, and in sun or dappled shade
