About us

As the leading UK supplier of tree and shrub seed, Forestart provides tested seed to forestry and amenity growers across the UK, Europe and the world. We supply the seed to grow the trees of tomorrow, specialising in collecting native species from local seed sources and breaking inherent seed dormancy.

About the role

We are looking for a Stratification Assistant to support our Stratification Manager in overseeing tree seed stratification processes across two locations. This is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in seed management, working in both outdoor and laboratory settings. While no prior experience in seed stratification is required, a strong willingness to learn and a dedicated work ethic are essential.

As a Stratification Assistant, you will work closely with the Stratification Manager, assisting with all aspects of tree and shrub seed stratification at Forestart. You will play a key role in monitoring and evaluating the quality and progress of over 500 seed batches from around 90 species, each with unique stratification needs.

The role spans two sites: our primary location in Hadnall and our secondary site in Aston, Wem. You’ll be working in a variety of environments, including the yard, polytunnels, cold stores, and the seed testing laboratory.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Conducting weekly visual checks on batches undergoing stratification.
  • Taking sampling of seed for inspection or testing
  • Performing regular quality assessments using different seed testing techniques, repeated throughout the year.
  • Monitoring and updating stock levels using our bespoke software and monitoring systems.
  • Maintaining and updating test records on our bespoke system and on Excel.
  • Using this data to guide the seed stratification and testing processes.
  • Leading small teams as required.

The role requires flexibility, as tasks will vary throughout the year.

Skills and Attributes We Are Looking For:

  • Attention to detail: Ability to notice important changes in seed batches and conditions.
  • Willingness to learn: An eagerness to develop new skills and knowledge in seed stratification.
  • Strong organisational skills: Capable of managing multiple tasks and maintaining accurate records.
  • Comfortable working with numbers and using computers, including basic Excel skills.
  • Physical endurance: Ability to handle physical tasks, including outdoor work in all seasons.
  • Teamwork: Able to work effectively as part of a team and take initiative when needed.
  • Comfortable working with a range of people from diverse backgrounds.
  • An interest in Science, Biology and Nature is desirable.

What We Offer:

  • Full training provided: No prior experience needed—just a commitment to learning.
  • Varied work environment: Split between outdoor tasks, laboratory work, and data management.
  • Supportive team: Work in a collaborative and close-knit team.
  • Career development: Gain valuable experience in seed biology and plant science.

Working Conditions:

  • Outdoor work year-round in varying weather conditions.
  • Travel between Hadnall and Aston, Wem.
  • Physically demanding tasks, especially during peak seasons.

If you are interested in starting a career in seed stratification and working with a dedicated team, we encourage you to apply.
