Description

Mentha aquatica

Water Mint is a highly aromatic perennial wild flower that grows in damp/wet places. It produces lots of tiny pale purple flowers arranged in small round heads in late summer and autumn. It is a rich source of nectar for all insects and an asset round a pond, although it can be invasive. Water Mint can grow to about 60cm and is probably best being chopped down in the winter. The leaves are less hairy than other mints, at first glance being smooth and often have edges that are purple tinged. Stems are square in cross section. Apart from being useful for wildlife, it stops erosion of stream banks and pond edges.
