Thrift is a perennial wildflower also known as Sea Pink. It grows in neat cushions on well drained, poor soils and is mostly found on cliffs, shingle and rocks near the coast. It is so decorative that it is used in alpine beds and rockeries. It is trouble-free, but does best in full sun and on neutral to alkaline soils, not acid. The pink pom-pom heads of flowers are held on robust stems above the evergreen foliage and appear in May, June, July. The colour can vary between white and dark pink. Generally flower stems are 10-15cm tall and the pompoms about 2cm in diameter. Good for butterflies and bees.
