Description
Scabiosa columbaria
A smallish perennial of poor soils, including heavily grazed calcareous downland, but will grow in any soil. This lovely wildflower has a deep root system so withstands drought. The sky-blue flowers appear between June and Oct. A useful ornamental plant for the garden, attracting not just insects but goldfinches for the seeds in autumn. Sow at any time of year, but best results from an autumn sowing.
