Description
Jasione montana
Sheep’s Bit Grows to 30-40cm on heath, acid grasslands and sea cliffs, especially in the west, often in good numbers. It tolerates poor thin soils and can either be annual or biennial. Fine bright green foliage in close mounds. The pincushion, blue flowers show well under ultra-violet light which makes them particularly attractive to insects – a really useful food source for beetles, flies, bees, wasps, butterflies and moths. Sow anytime of year onto disturbed soil. Tends to be biennial, so needs the occasional re-sowing. Not really a Scabious, closer to Campanula.
The seed germinates better if pre-chilled in damp sand in the fridge for a few weeks, then sown on the surface of good quality seed compost. Don’t cover with compost or vermiculite.
