Description

Papaver rhoeas

Field Poppy is the most well known and symbolic wild flower. It is now seen on field edges rather than in crops themselves. Long before the flower was used for Remembrance day, it was the sacred plant of the Roman goddess of crops, Ceres, and during medieval times picking poppies was thought to provoke thunderstorms before harvest. Tissue paper red flowers produced from early summer into the autumn. It is a native annual

The best plants grow from an autumn sowing, but spring is fine too. Needs to be sown on disturbed soil.

Shropshire seed
