Cornflower blue of this annual wildflower in summer cornfields used to be a common sight, but it virtually disappeared in the 1970s. The resilient seed will survive for years, to sprout unexpectedly in freshly disturbed soil.
Also known as Bluebottle, the flower can be used in salads and in herbalism as a wash for tired eyes. Artists use crushed flowers mixed with alum as a watercolour pigment.
Sow any time from late summer to the end of March in prepared ground and a sunny spot.
