Katsura is a small deciduous tree with attractive heart shaped leaves, pink when new, fresh green sometimes tinged purple in summer and then bright yellows, oranges, reds and pinks in autumn. Autumn leaves have a caramel/burnt sugar scent and male trees have a stronger scent than female trees. Rarely flowers. Often multi-stemmed.

Treatment required: Shallow sow in warmth. Keep compost moist.

Seed/kg:     c. 1,360,000;   approx 300,000 germinal seed/kg

Ideal sowing period: Spring. Autumn sown will germinate in spring.

Soil Conditions: Humus rich but well drained

Planting instructions: Dappled shade and the shelter of light woodland is preferable.

New shoots tend to be frost susceptible so some protection needed.
