Small deciduous tree with attractive heart shaped leaves, pink when new, fresh green sometimes tinged purple in summer and then bright yellows, oranges, reds and pinks in autumn. Autumn leaves have a caramel/burnt sugar scent. Rarely flowers.

Treatment required: Shallow sow in warmth. Keep compost moist.

Ideal sowing period: Spring. Autumn sown will germinate in spring. 
Soil Conditions: Humus rich but well drained
Planting instructions: Dappled shade and the shelter of light
woodland is preferable.
New shoots tend to be frost susceptible so some protection needed.
