Latin Name: Onopordum acanthium
Forestart Reference: SCOTHI

The emblem of Scotland! Leaves looking as though they're covered in cotton wool. Purple thistle flowers in summer and early autumn. As with all thistles, great for insects.

A fantastic, architectural biennial for the back of borders or as a security barrier! Not quite a native, but naturalised from Europe. In the first year produce very grey, hairy rosettes of leaves which grow in the second year to over 2m tall. Both leaves and branched stems are white, hairy and fiercesomely spikey. Flowers mid to late summer, purple thistle heads sometimes over 5cm  diameter. Sow in autumn or spring in normal well drained soil, in sun or part shade. Lightly rake in.

Seed from Shropshire
