Description

Viola odorata

One of the earliest wildflowers to bloom. Diminutive, creeping plants with heart shaped leaves and purple, sometimes white, scented, flowers. Grows in hedgerows, scrubby land and open woodlands. Flowers were used to make perfume and to scent houses, also in cooking and to relieve insomnia, headaches and depression. Sown in the autumn for flowers the following spring or put in damp sand in the fridge before sowing. Needs a period of cold for germination.
