Phacelia tanacetifolia
Phacelia or Fiddlehead is an attractive hardy annual but is not really a native wild flower. It came originally from California. It is very useful for attracting pollinating bees and hoverflies for aphid control in crops. Also good as a green manure. Lilac-blue flowers open on curling stems, blooming progressively and give a long flowering period through the summer. The stems are hairy and leaves are lacey. It generously seeds itself. Sow from March to September for best results, and seed must be covered over with a thin soil layer or germination won’t happen!
