Description

Allium ursinum

Wild Garlic is often found with Bluebells in woods and damp shady spots. It has strappy leaves and heads of white starry flowers in May. The leaves start dying down early in the summer. En-masse they have quite a strong smell, but are actually mildly flavoured, making a very fashionable addition to Italian style meals.

Sow seed as soon as ripe, or store in a fridge and sow in the spring. Use good quality seed compost and sprinkle the seed on the surface. Cover to a depth of 0.5 cm with compost and/or vermiculite. Keep damp but not too wet. Germination can take up 12wks.  When big enough, transplant separately into small pots, eventually planting out in a suitable, shady spot. Seedlings will take 2 or 3 years to be mature enough to flower.
