Description

Plantago lanceolata

Plantain is a tough and adaptable perennial wildflower. It grows rosettes of leathery, lance-shaped leaves which are flattened if grazed but taller in hay meadows. It flowers all summer. The anthers are the showy part, rather than the petals which are virtually non-existent. Insects visit to collect pollen, but the plant itself is wind pollinated.
Plantain establishes easily, but will not take over any site and is ‘a must’ for a balanced meadow. Sow at anytime, but it germinates more consistently if given a period of 4 weeks mixed with damp sand, in the fridge.
