Latin Name: Caltha palustris
Forestart Reference: MARMAR

Bright golden Kingcups survive the harshest early spring conditions.

Large golden buttercup-like flowers appear very early in the spring above glossy, fleshy leaves. Thought to have survived the last period of glaciation, it is a native of boggy fields, streamsides and damp ditches. It thrives in partial shade and clay soils. Flowering so early means that it is a useful source of pollen and nectar for early insects. All parts are poisonous and can cause skin irritation.

Best sown in the autumn, or damp stratify in the fridge.
