Shop > Wildflower > Single Species Wildflower > Sheep's Bit Scabious

Latin Name: Jasione montana
Forestart Reference: SHEBISCA

Rather like Devil's bit Scabious, but the flowers are less flat and a lighter blue.

Grows 30-40cm on heath. acid grasslands and sea cliffs, especially in the west, often in good numbers. It tolerates poor thin soils and can either be annual or biennial. The flowers show well under ultra-violet light which makes them particularly attractive to insects - a really useful food source for beetles, flies, bees, wasps, butterflies and moths. Sow anytime of year onto disturbed soil. Tends to be biennial, so needs the occasional re-sowing.
