Latin Name: Stachys officinalis
Forestart Reference: BETON

Reddish-purple flowers on 50cm spikes appearing June to Sept.

Grows in open woods, hedgerows and grassland i.e. sun or shade. Will survive, but not flower when grazed by cattle, suddenly to appear when grazing is reduced or stopped.

Used from Roman times against headache, toothache, liver and bronchial complaints. It was also smoked in herbal mixtures.

Sow late summer or autumn for best results, since it requires a cold period to germinate.

Seed from Shropshire
